Visual Identity
The Art of Utterance is a digital, interactive museum exhibit that aims to unite global cultures, dialects, and geography through everyday objects. Using common objects that unite us in our daily lives, it documents words used to describe the same along with the accent and pronunciation from individuals around the world. The data points come together to form larger words commonly used by people in larger geographic areas.
The exhibit's visual identity was designed with standardized neutral colors, simple typography, and punctuation marks as graphic elements to accommodate diversity and varied data.
Texture that loosely resembled chatter and aerial view of dense population was used to elevate sections of information and the interaction.
Data and Systems
A survey was conducted via mobile phones in two stages to collect diverse live data from individuals, encompassing identity, historical, and cultural context, as well as information about the exhibit.
This data was translated into a large screen visualisation for a museum exhibit, exclusively accessible to contributors worldwide, showcasing their data.
Categorisation included individuals' perceived home location, associated cultural identity, and current geographic residence, with the map dynamically changing with filters.
Creating a Map
A map with dotted data points to form regional words was designed for the interactive screen. Every data point, when clicked on, provides historical, cultural and linguistic information about the word.
The map below informs of the words used for the prompt image of “Shoes“.
